Aquatech Mexico, an event that brought together professionals, experts, and investors from various industries to discuss challenges and opportunities in water technology, infrastructure, and reuse in the Americas, took place in Mexico City from September 5th to 7th, 2023. The event delved into Mexico's strides toward a more sustainable future amid significant challenges.

Among the attendees were Alejandro Delgado, Country Manager Mexico at SiiLA, and Carlos Garces, Sales Coordinator Mexico at SiiLA. Invited by the Embassy of the Netherlands, Delgado and Garces actively participated in various forums, sharing their insights and expertise on water management in the commercial real estate sector. Both SiiLA collaborators continued exchanging ideas at Ambassador Wilfred Mohr's residence after the event.

Water treatment and collection programs are vital in the commercial real estate industry, ensuring environmental sustainability and building operational efficiency. These programs facilitate water reuse and recycling, reducing dependence on costly water sources and addressing construction projects' flooding and stormwater management challenges. This promotes environmental responsibility, yields substantial long-term savings, and enhances competitiveness in a market increasingly valuing sustainability.

Challenges and Prospects in Mexico

Mexico confronts significant water-related challenges exacerbated by prolonged heatwaves in recent years. According to data from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) cited by Aquatech, only 58% of Mexico's population has daily running water, with approximately six million people lacking access to this vital resource. Furthermore, the data indicates that 11 million people need access to sanitation services, and only 14% of the population receives water 24 hours a day.

In response to this situation, Aquatech reported that the Mexican government has implemented innovative initiatives such as cloud seeding, which has successfully countered drought in certain areas, and desalination, whose capacity in Mexico increased by 240% between 2012 and 2022.

Reusing wastewater also presents an opportunity to reduce the demand for fresh water in agricultural and industrial sectors. On a corporate level, Unilever is a notable example, investing in technologies to optimize water usage in its operations.

Aquatech serves as a platform offering information and analysis to water technology professionals, organizing events in countries like China, the Netherlands, and Mexico.

Engagement in sustainability issues is crucial for SiiLA, its collaborators, and its clients. For more information on real estate sector trends, visit SiiLA REsource or contact us at contacto@siila.com.mx.
