The traditional office model is being challenged by an innovative form of collaborative work: coworking. This option has become increasingly popular among entrepreneurs, freelancers, and remote workers looking for a more social and flexible work environment.

Coworking involves sharing a common workspace with several individuals or companies rather than working in a traditional office. Each individual or team can rent a coworking space to work independently on their project or business while sharing common resources and services, such as meeting rooms, break areas, high-speed Internet, printers, and other office equipment.

The coworking sector is the third largest in terms of square footage occupancy in the office markets of Mexico's main cities, behind the finance and the administration-and-utilities sectors. According to SiiLA Market Analytics, between 2019 and 2022, the number of companies offering coworking services in Mexico increased by almost 30%. Likewise, data indicates that this business model prioritizes quality spaces, with 68% of coworking offices classified as Class A+ and 22% as Class A.

In Mexico, several coworking companies have a strong presence and offer collaborative workspaces in different parts of the country. IZA Business Centers, IOS Offices, and Regus are some of Mexico's best-known and most popular coworking companies. However, many other options are available in different cities throughout the country.

The benefits of a more flexible model

Coworking is an attractive alternative for professionals seeking a more flexible and economical option than the traditional office model. One of the main benefits of coworking is cost reduction. By sharing common space and services, rental costs, maintenance, and some equipment, a considerable amount of expenses are distributed among all coworking members, resulting in a lower total cost for each member. Additionally, coworking spaces often offer different membership and rental options, allowing professionals to choose the plan that best suits their needs and budget.

Flexibility is also a great benefit. Members can use the space based on their needs, allowing them to work more efficiently and flexibly than in a traditional office. This enables professionals to have greater control over their time and adapt to changes in their work environment.

Another key benefit of coworking is the creation of communities and collaborative environments. By sharing space with other professionals, coworking members can connect, collaborate, and learn from other members. This can be especially valuable for entrepreneurs and freelancers, allowing them to network and gain valuable feedback on their work.

In addition, coworking spaces often offer services and resources that can be costly or difficult for a freelancer to obtain, such as meeting rooms, receptionists, cleaning services, and high-quality office equipment, among others.
