The Government of Mexico City has updated the Sustainable Buildings Certification Program (PCES) with the aim of promoting sustainability in the construction and operation of buildings. The program seeks to reduce pollutant emissions and the consumption of natural resources, improving the quality of life for residents. It focuses on aspects such as sustainable design, responsible construction, and efficient building operation.
During the design phase, efforts are made to harness air and sunlight, rationalize water and energy consumption, preserve green areas, and optimize waste management. In the construction phase, the program considers the environmental impact of material manufacturing and aims to reduce electricity, energy, and water consumption. In the operation phase, efficient water use, energy-efficient lighting, and the creation of green areas that enhance comfort and livability are promoted.
The PCES applies to large-scale buildings, extensive land areas, and those with influence on natural or cultural heritage sites or monuments. It also includes projects that impact indigenous communities, have high water consumption or waste generation, and are located in specific areas determined by the Ministry of the Environment. The program encompasses nine sustainability categories and establishes certification levels based on scores achieved in the design, construction, and operation stages of buildings.
