Smurfit Kappa has invested $23.5 million to modernize its sheet plant in Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas. The company, focused on corrugated packaging, aims to transform its plant into a fully integrated corrugated facility.

The capital was also allocated to the expansion of a building and the acquisition of state-of-the-art corrugating equipment. Laurent Sellier, CEO of Smurfit Kappa in the Americas, stated that this investment reinforces the company's commitment to being a key player in the growth of the Mexican market and enhancing its alliances within the sectors driving the local economy in the Nuevo Laredo region. It is worth noting that Smurfit Kappa's factory in Nuevo Laredo has strong partnerships in the industrial, appliances, and electronics sectors.

This latest investment adds to the expansion of the corrugated plant in Culiacán, in northwest Mexico, carried out last year for $22 million. Smurfit Kappa will also contribute to reducing CO2 emissions. According to the company, the capital will significantly advance the plant's ambitious sustainability goals. The new machine, which started operating last week, will have the dual advantage of reducing CO2 emissions by up to 40% and doubling its production capacity.

Furthermore, the increased capacity will streamline Smurfit Kappa's operations in San Antonio, Texas, where the growing demand for sustainable packaging requires higher production volumes. Eduardo Rubio, CEO of Smurfit Kappa North America, added that the increased production capacity resulting from this investment has strengthened their ability to meet the needs of current and potential customers in the region. "Smurfit Kappa is a reliable source of high-performance sustainable packaging, regardless of product complexity or supply chain requirements," Rubio stated.
