After two years of announcing the disappearance of Superama and its migration to Walmart Express, the self-service retail company will bid a definitive goodbye to the Superama brand this year. They are set to introduce their new Walmart Express format to all 32 states of Mexico.
In an exclusive interview with
Forbes Mexico, Mariano Fiscella, the Vice President of the retail chain, emphasized that consolidating under a single brand has significantly helped them in reaching a wider customer base. This consolidation has also led to a substantial increase in sales and an expansion of their omnichannel offerings.
The new Walmart Express format allows the company to leverage its scale and negotiate better prices with suppliers. These savings can then be passed on to the consumers—a feat that was previously challenging to achieve with the smaller Superama stores.
According to Fiscella, there are currently 89 Walmart Express stores in operation, with an additional 11 stores undergoing the conversion process. As a result, by the end of this year, Superama will no longer have any branches operating under its brand name.
Fiscella further highlighted that the company's ambitious plans involve expanding the Walmart Express format to all 32 states of Mexico. They have already obtained approval for several dozen projects, and Walmart Express branches can already be found in cities such as Mexicali and Mérida.
