Walmart, Soriana and Chedraui Will Face Oxxo With Their 'Minisuper' Stores
- Supermarket chains like Walmart, Soriana, and Chedraui are focusing on smaller store formats to compete with convenience stores like Oxxo.
- These smaller "minisupers" offer proximity, low prices, and essential products, and require a lower investment compared to larger supermarkets.

Supermarket chains have chosen to promote smaller-sized stores in order to compete with convenience stores such as Oxxo.
Walmart, Soriana, and Chedraui have found an opportunity for growth in these smaller formats, which range in size from 30 to 1,000 square meters. This allows them to be located within neighborhoods, and in many cases, consumers only have to walk a few blocks to reach one.
The key feature of these 'minisupers' is their proximity, in addition to offering low prices and selling essential products.
These units are not new, as some department stores have been exploring these formats for nearly a decade.
Since then, they have experienced exponential growth, as they represent an investment that is less than 25% of what is required for a larger supermarket.
